Joe Engel

Joe Engel is a Denver based cellist with over 17 years of experience in a variety of genres, including classical, bluegrass, punk, and rock. He hopes to bring his versatility to bear as a member of the Nebula ensemble, working with composers who have drastically differing languages. An avid performer of new music, Joe has helped to debut dozens of new works by composers across the US. Recently, he helped premier and record a new musical, “Man Up”, by Cordelia Zars, which will be workshopped to both Colorado and Broadway theatres in the coming year.
Joe has been studying and performing Balinese Gamelan for five years, and recently completed a tour of Bali, Indonesia, where video of their performance has reached nearly two million views on YoutTube. He is thrilled to be a member of the Nebula Ensemble, and looks forward to helping promote new music and composers in Colorado.
He holds a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance, and Music Theory and Composition from Jacksonville University, and a Masters of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Denver. He has studied with notable performers and pedagogues such as Matthew Zalkind, Jurgen DeLemos, Rich Slavich, Shannon Lockwood, Daniel Morganstern, and Carol Tarr.
